Annual Report

Their WILL. Your POWER.

Annual Report 2012

Dear Friends, You can be very proud. Your belief in Beit Issie Shapiro’s dream and vision is the essential difference that enables us to change the lives of so many children, parents, siblings and grandparents, as well as impact on society in Israel and internationally. The highlight of 2012 was Beit Issie Shapiro’s appointment as a Special Consultant in the field of disabilities, to the United Nations Economic and Social Council. But by far the most significant moments happen every day at Beit Issie Shapiro, when our children overcome great daily challenges, fulfill their true potential, and blossom in many wondrous ways. Your vital support enables us to develop innovative programs, improve quality of life, change attitudes in society, share our knowledge, and spread our wings in the care and treatment of people with disabilities. You are truly making a difference in the lives of over 30,000 children and adults with disabilities and their families, each year.

Thank you for helping turn dreams into realities.

NEW HORIZONS WITH iPADS: ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY, ADVANCING COMMUNICATION In 2012, Beit Issie Shapiro started to unleash a whole new world of communication for children with complex disabilities. Thanks to a pilot program generously funded by the Ruderman Family Foundation, Beit Issie Shapiro began developing therapy through touch screen devices (such as iPads), enabling our children to express their needs, to increase their cognitive learning and to develop and strengthen their motor skills. The initiative also promotes inclusion, giving our children a profound new connection to the world by enabling them to play and interact with their peers in social settings. At home, the children can use touch screen devices both to communicate with parents and siblings as well as for recreation, providing parents with much-needed respite. Beit Issie Shapiro was selected by iDigital, the Apple value-added distributer in Israel, to co-develop the most effective apps for this population and to generate far reaching exposure. Moving forward in 2013, our vision is to establish a Touch-Screen Device Technology Hub that will benefit hundreds of thousands of people with disabilities in Israel (at least 10% of the country’s population) and their families – and impact on the tens of thousands of professionals, therapists, teachers and others who work with them through guidance and training. This initiative will be accompanied by the relevant evaluation and academic research.

Special thanks to our overseas friends and the

From Vision to Impact Beit Issie Shapiro is Israel’s leading innovator in the care and treatment of children with disabilities. Over the years, Beit Issie Shapiro has pioneered: Israel’s FIRST Early Intervention Center • Israel’s FIRST inclusive and accessible playground for children with and without disabilities • Israel’s FIRST and largest hydrotherapy program for children with developmental and physical • disabilities The world’s FIRST Snoezelen multi-sensory environment for children with autism and other sensory • issues. We believe not only in caring for each child individually, but in providing essential support to families, as well as and partnership with communities and allies from different sectors. In this way, we can build a more inclusive society which assures the rights and opportunities for maximum growth and development of children and adults with diverse abilities. With centers in Ra’anana and Kalansua, our innovations and state-of-the-art services are used as models throughout the world. We share knowledge through research and training, and collaborate with professionals in Israel and internationally.

Special Consultant in the Field of Disabilities to the United Nations Economic and Social Council Beit Issie Shapiro’s influence does not stop at Israel’s borders. In 2012, we were selected as a Special Consultant in the Field of Disabilities to the UN Economic and Social Council. Being awarded this status puts us on the global map as one of the top organizations in the field of disabilities worldwide and means we are also representing the best of what Israel has to offer to the world. This status will also assist us in our strategic professional global outreach, including providing our expertise through training and consultation, and further promoting our export models. In addition, we will have more opportunity to network with other organizations, create new opportunities for professional development, collaborative research, share best practices, help raise public awareness, monitor and implement international agreements, as well as resource development. “The ECOSOC family is very happy to accept Beit Issie Shapiro as a Special Consultant to the Committee. They have an important role and, moving forward, will take part in one of the most important committees, bringing advancement to the world. I expect them to bring us knowledge and share their methods. This is a worthy organization and we are looking forward to working with them.” Andrei Abramov, Chief United Nations Department of Social Affairs NGO Branch

EDUCATIONAL AND THERAPEUTIC SERVICES

In 2012, over 5,000 children with disabilities and their families benefited from our enriched, holistic treatment and special education programs. We treat the full spectrum of disabilities across all ages, through our therapeutic daycare and innovative outpatient services. A “Snoezeled” Dental Home

Nearly 1,000 clients passed through the doors of our Dental Clinic in 2012. 64% of clients were under the age of 18, and 34% were on the autism spectrum. Children with autism especially benefit from our Sensory Adapted (“Snoezelen”) Dental Environment to dramatically reduce dental anxiety.

Grandparenting: Supporting the Entire Family

Even grandparents receive critical support from Beit Issie Shapiro. As we understand that having a child affects the whole family, we shared the expertise that we have developed to benefit thousands of families across Israel, including through our support groups and an article on ‘special grandparenting’ produced in collaboration with Bar Ilan University. Creating Services for Unmet Needs Children with Cerebral Palsy are now able to benefit from new classes and innovative therapies that Beit Issie Shapiro tailored specifically to their needs. After identifying a lack of services for children with Cerebral Palsy in the central region of Israel, we changed our target population and re-trained our staff in order to provide a much-needed framework for these children. Leading the Way for Better Health Care of Children With Autism More families of children with autism are now able to receive Beit Issie Shapiro’s innovative treatments. One of Israel’s major health funds selected Beit Issie Shapiro as its preferred organization for allied health patient referrals (including Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy).

Care and treatment that maximizes quality of life “Our lives are divided into two parts - before Beit Issie Shapiro and after. Before, I could describe our life in three words: anxiety, frustration, and burden. After Rhea was accepted to Beit Issie Shapiro, I can describe our life with three very different words: relief, happiness, and hope” Ziv, Rhea’s father

SOCIAL CHANGE AND ADVOCACY IN THE COMMUNITY

Beit Issie Shapiro drives social change in order to provide more rights and resources for children with disabilities and their families. We raise public awareness, engage in legislative advocacy, and promote community involvement and education so that we can build a more just, responsible and inclusive society. Park Chaverim:

Spreading our Model of Inclusion Our Park Chaverim has led to a total of 48 parks currently in motion. As of 2012: 4 inclusive and accessible parks have been built • and are operating based on Beit Issie Shapiro’s model (2 with our educational programming) 11 municipalities are receiving our guidance • 33 municipalities have initiated the building • process Creating a Movement for Self Advocacy For the first time, adults with intellectual disabilities are developing skills to make meaningful decisions about their own lives through our self-advocacy initiative. Special thanks to the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles who awarded a generous grant to this emerging joint effort with fellow disabilities organization Israel Elwyn.

Pioneering Inclusion Through Volunteerism

Hundreds of volunteers contribute to us through their time, and become emissaries of our mission. We pioneered the inclusion of volunteers with disabilities, thanks to the Sobell Foundation. More organizations throughout Israel are turning to us to duplicate our model.

Youth Leadership: A Model for Youth-at-Risk

Youth-at-risk experience the power of giving for the first time through our youth leadership program, in partnership with the Education Ministry. To promote inclusion amongst teenage youth who are easily influenced by stereotypes, we engaged new teen leadership groups to learn about disabilities, volunteer with children with disabilities, and share the message of inclusion in their communities.
